Managing asset lists

Asset lists can be managed from the Assets Overview page. The tables show the assets in the selected asset lists, separated by your asset lists and pfolio's asset lists.

To choose the asset lists you want to display on the page, select or deselect from the 'Asset Lists Selection for Tables' dropdown menu in the settings tab.

Adding assets to your asset database

Your asset database comes preloaded with the most commonly used assets. With just a few clicks you can add additional assets or customise existing assets.

The 'Asset Ticker' is used to uniquely identify an asset across the platform. Once the 'Asset Ticker' has been set, it cannot be changed. If you want to change an 'Asset Ticker', you would have to delete the asset and create it again.

Click on 'Add Asset' on the Assets Overview or the Asset Database page or head to the Asset Builder page to start the process.

Add an asset from an external data provider

Adding an asset from an external data provider downloads the asset data from the data provider to our platform and refreshes the asset data daily.

Select 'Data Provider' from the 'Data Source' dropdown to start the process.

Import an asset

Importing an asset downloads the asset data from a file provided by you to our platform. You can upload a .csv or Excel file (asset data will not refresh over time) or you can provide a URL to a .csv file (asset data will refresh daily).

You can find a template .csv file here.

Select 'Import' from the 'Data Source' dropdown to start the process.

Create an asset

There are three ways you can create an asset:

  1. Asset transformation: Apply various transformations to an existing asset
  2. Continuous future: Create a continuous future from individual futures contracts—and apply various transformations to an existing asset
  3. Synthetic asset: Create an asset from a blend of existing assets—and apply various transformations to an existing asset

Select 'Created' from the 'Data Source' dropdown to start the process.

Asset transformation

Our platform offers various transformations that can be applied to existing assets:

  • Backfill: Extends the asset's date range backwards by estimating from another asset with a longer date range
  • Leverage: Amplifies the asset's returns
  • Fee: Applies a fee (e.g. a funds management fee) that reduces the asset's returns
  • Yield: Applies a yield (e.g. interest or dividends) that boosts the asset's returns
  • Currency conversion: Converts the asset to a different currency

Asset transformations can be combined in any combination.

Select 'Asset Transformation' from the 'Type' dropdown to start the process.

If you leave the 'Asset Ticker' field blank, an asset ticker will be automatically generated by adding extensions to the original asset ticker. For example, GLD_e is the extended version of the GLD ETF, i.e. a backfill has been applied to the GLD ETF

Example: Backfilling an asset

Continuous future

To invest in futures, you have to invest in individual futures contracts that expire. To keep exposure over longer periods you have to sell the expiring futures contract and buy the new futures contract—called a futures roll.

A continuous futures contract simulates the performance of continually rolling individual futures contracts over longer periods.

Select 'Continuous Future' from the 'Type' dropdown to start the process.

Example: Creating a continuous future and backfilling it

Synthetic asset

A synthetic asset simulates being invested in different assets at a constant allocation.

In the example, an asset is created that is equal parts the SPY ETF, the GLD ETF, and the TLT ETF.

Example: Creating a synthetic asset from three individual assets

Editing assets

Only created assets can be edited.

Select the asset you want to edit from the asset database and click 'Edit' in the 'Actions' dropdown menu. Click 'Update Asset' once you completed the edits.

Editing asset attributes

Asset attributes help to categorise and filter assets. For example, the asset attribute 'Asset Type' can be used in the Portfolio Builder to only allow assets of a certain type in your portfolio.

Only asset attributes of assets owned by you can be edited by you—see the 'Owner' column in the asset database.

Select the asset you want to edit from the asset database and click 'Edit' in the 'Actions' dropdown menu.

Scroll to the 'Asset Attributes' tab. Click 'Update Attributes' once you completed the edits.
